ST. ANGELA ACADEMY IN AIKEN, SC

November 26, 2012

St. Angela Academy is only a memory now, but our high school experience extends well beyond that time and place. We hope that this WWW site will serve as
The Virtual St. Angela Academy
an electronic archive of words and images, and a point of contact for former students and faculty.

Prospective reunion organizers, please read this.

LATEST UPDATES:
November 26, 2012 I have been working on the SAA site, adding new email addresses and checking for dead links. EVERYONE: Please check your contact information in the database, and check the information for your friends, family, and classmates. Send me an email or call me at 610-519-6023 and bend my ear or leave a message.

Also, I am in the process of placing a copy of this web site on my brother Ralph's (class of 1966) site: http://ralphmaloney.org/saa/     So, if a meteor lands on my head (unlikely at best), or Villanova cannot host the site on server astro4, we have a mirror that is on-line. If you find any problems with this site on astro4 or its mirror at Ralph's please let me know. BTW, did you notice the correct usage of "its mirror"? Thank you Sister De Neri.

I have modest proposal (no, not the Jonathan Swift version). This holiday season, when we have some time, take a look at your pictures from your days at Saint Angela. Get them scanned and send the images to me, and I will post them here. Our progeny should be able to see a little of something that made them what they are.

July 27, 2005 Today I received this absolutely remarkable email and photos.

Dear Mr. Maloney,

We thought you might be interested to see a few pictures of our home on the former site of St. Angela Academy. These photos were taken earlier this month, about six months after we moved here. The home and barn are completely surrounded by a two-acre paddock which extends from Rye Patch on the east side to Ridgeley Hall on the west side. We live here with our two horses, four dogs, three cats and three birds.

We purchased the property in the fall of 2003, about four years after the school had been razed. Our objective in 2004 was to build a home and barn in the style and tradition of other winter colony homes on Berrie Road. We hope we have accomplished that. We have used the original entrances that were used by the school. All trees still alive and standing were preserved. As you can see in one of the photos attached, we have kept and continue to maintain the St. Angela monument out of respect for the past.

We live here year 'round. We feel the vibrations of the property's past, reflecting the caring and goodness of the students and teachers present here before us. We consider ourselves custodians of the property, and try to maintain it to our highest vision. We use no herbicides, insecticides or fertilizers, preferring to use nature's bounty of sun and water. Hopefully, we can serve as a visible reminder to our friends, visitors and passersby of how to treat the land and one's animals to live in harmony with nature. We love the cardinals, blue birds and hummingbirds which grace our flowers every day. Horse-drawn carriages continue to frequent Berrie Road on the way to/from Hitchcock Woods. Could this be Paradise?

Not infrequently someone will stop to take a photo of the St. Angela monument, or stop us on our way to Hitchcock Woods to compliment and thank us for what we have done here. Frequently, these are former students and teachers, while some have no such connection but must be attracted to the serenity and beauty of the place.

You are welcome to share all or part of this message and photos with St. Angela alumni/ae and/or place them on the St. Angela web site. We are honored to be here. We hope you are pleased with what we have done.

Sincerely,
Victor and Kate Woolley

May 4, 2004 Saints from the class of '74 celebrated a reunion in Aiken in June 2004. Here is the announcement in word format.

March 28, 2004 Following the fabulous suggestion by Stephen Mueller '79, I have established the St. Angela Academy mail list at Yahoo. After joining (it's free), you send one email to the list address and it goes to everyone on the list.
It works like this:
Go to St. Angela on Yahoo

Click the "Join This Group!" button.

Sign on to Yahoo if you are a Yahoo member, or click the "Sign up now" link to join Yahoo.

Follow the directions.

Lastly, send an email to StAngela@yahoogroups.com to let everyone else on the list that you have arrived!
Be sure to tell your classmates about this group.

March 27, 2004 From Jeanette Graham Redd '54 comes the senior class portrait. Photographs such as these are invaluable, since we do not have yearbooks for all SAA classes. Scour those photographs in your archives and let me know what you find!

October 1, 2003 Rick Stetson '62 discovered a copy of a letter from Sr. Veronica Hanas, dated June 28, 1988, announcing the closing of St. Angela Academy. If you click on the thumbnail at the right, you can download the 1.7 MByte JPG image.

To protect privacies, I have removed Sr. Hanas' signature and address.
